The Imperial Six Steeds are among the most revered treasures of Chinese civilization — the six legendary war horses of Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty , carved in stone beside his tomb in 636 AD to commemorate the steeds that carried him through the battles that founded the Tang Empire.

Six Steeds, Six Stories of Glory
Saluzi — The purple steed. During the siege of Luoyang, Emperor Taizong was separated from his guards. Saluzi was struck by an arrow. General Qiu Xinggong rushed to pull the arrow from the horse's chest. This is the only relief featuring a human figure, honoring both the horse's sacrifice and the general's loyalty.
Quanmaogua — The yellow steed with a black muzzle and curly mane. Wounded by nine arrows during the campaign against Liu Heida — six in the front, three in the back — a testament to the brutality of war and the horse's endurance.
Baitiwu — The pure black steed with four white hooves. Ridden during the defeat of Xue Rengao. The relief captures it rearing up, eyes fierce, hooves flying — the very image of unstoppable fury.
Telebiao — The yellow steed with a white muzzle. Ridden during the campaign against Song Jingang. "Tele" is a Turkic noble title, reflecting the Tang Dynasty's open embrace of foreign cultures.
Qingzhui — The pale dappled steed. Ridden during the defeat of Dou Jiande. Struck by five arrows, all from frontal charges — proof of its fearless leadership from the front.
Shifachi — The pure red steed. Ridden in the decisive battles of Luoyang and Hulao Pass against Wang Shichong and Dou Jiande. Leaping through the air, struck by five arrows, yet never faltering.
The Deeper Meaning:
These six steeds are far more than memorials. They are:
